Why are anime protagonists generally so silent/forgettable?

I mean it’s a running joke, the anime protagonist is not going to be very interesting. I understand that the creators wanted you to imagine yourself as the main character, but come on. Sometimes it would be nice to have a full developed interesting protagonist for once.
