I (F35) am by far the better earner in our relationship, and have been since the start, and my job is also more stable and highly sought after. My husband (M39) also earns a good wage, which is comfortable for us as a family. Our daughter is 3 years old and has been in childcare since she was one.

We both work full time, but I am starting to worry about money as my mother has just been diagnosed with what will be terminal cancer, and she will need in the region of £30k for treatment, and my sister and I will be splitting this. My mother won't be allowed treatment without paying, and she doesn't have it, hence us paying for her.

He has just said he wants to be a stay at home dad, and I'm worried that I won't be able to cover everything. We have had this conversation before and I have always said I wouldn't mind him staying at home, as long as we can afford it, and he previously always said no. He has changed his mind suddenly, and I don't know what to do. I'm also worried that it will make it hard for me to pay for my mothers treatment and my daughters education in the future.

I have suggested we do the calculations and see if this is possible and he got really angry and said why don't I just earn more, as if I could just magic up more money!

I'm at a loss as to what to do.

Tl;dr! My husband has said he wants to be a stay at home dad but I don't think I will be able to afford this.

Edit - thank you for your comments. It's given me lots to think about. We will be having a conversation tonight, and I will be looking over our budget to see where we can cut back on things. And yes, I am going to insist on him getting a part time job if he wants to stay at home.

Also, for those saying my mother should remortgage - she is 68, most likely only has 2 years left and has no assets other than her house, so this is unlikely.

For those who suggested a second job - I already do 2 jobs! I work full time, and part time at the weekend. He has just been laid off, which is why he suddenly wants to be at home, so I've suggested he gets a part time job.
