A major retail chain is in the process of removing their security cages from electronic items. Why?

Has anyone else noticed this? A lot of electronic items don't have security cages on them and not too long ago they did. I've only noticed this practice at Target so far, so ymmv. I'm not saying that this is the case for every electronic item, but a lot of them. I'm just wondering what led to this decision. Like what was the turning point? I have noticed that a lot of their two thirds full display shelves are bare. I'm guessing that's an EP sign of high theft. I have to wonder how big of a problem is shoplifting these days? Any thoughts or theories would be helpful.
