Chambers

My son's camera monitor alerted in the middle of the night. I checked it and saw my wife and son sitting on the bed. They weren't my wife and son.

I'm a nurse and I currently work nights. It's a struggle and I can't wait for our son to get a little older and I can go back to working days, but it's a job and I'm in a position where I can only do this type of work. My wife works during the day and she's usually asleep by the time I get home, so I tend to get some me time in the morning. It's an Elena Kagan quote I think, but "I have a very gendered division of labor in my household." I love that quote.

I bring that up because it's relevant. It explains why I was the one who heard the monitor go off. I always turn it off when I'm in the room because I don't want to hear the sound of him breathing, but I always turn it back on when I'm on the computer by myself.

Last night I was on our pc playing some games and doing some browsing. Since I already was on the computer, I kept the monitor on, and around 2:30am, it alerted me that there was movement and sound. It was just one beep, and the monitor didn't turn on besides the red light above it. This usually happens once or twice a night and my son's never actually awake or upset. It's just a beep to let you know that there's movement or noise, it doesn't always mean they're awake.

However, I still check every time. Trole the camera around the room and make sure everything is okay before I go back to whatever I was doing. Last night was no different. I trolled it around and saw my wife and son sitting on the bed, both sleeping. It was a relief and I went back to gaming.

That was it. Everything was normal and I went back to my day.

It wasn't until this morning that I started thinking something was weird. Around 8am, my son woke me up and I went downstairs to make some breakfast. My wife was already in the kitchen making some tea and I thought it was a little strange she was already up because she usually sleeps in a bit. It was 8:00, and she usually doesn't start stirring until around 10:00 or 11:00.

I broke my morning silence and asked her "Hey, did you have a bad night's sleep?" She kind of looked at me weird and asked "What do you mean?"

I said "Well you're usually asleep when I come down." And she said...

"I went to bed at 2am. I'm tired." And then she went back to making tea.

That exchange was a little strange, again, nothing big. She went back to bed after making some tea and I didn't hear from her for a few hours after. Now I'm not going to lie, I took that as license to go on a little deep dive on Reddit. Not just any deep dive, but a deep dive into this sub. I dug through creepiest, scariest, and strangest until my eyes were glued to the screen.

I took a little break around 11am to make my son some lunch. I went upstairs to see if my wife wanted anything and she was getting ready for the day. I asked her if she wanted to eat with us and she said "Yeah, I'm not really tired anymore." And that was it. I went back downstairs and that was that.

It wasn't until tonight, right now, that I'm really thinking about it. My son's sleeping, my wife is out with some girlfriends, and I'm by myself again on the pc. It was a normal day today. My wife acted totally normal. My son was his usual baby self. So tonight, I decided to look back at the footage from the camera.

I saw myself looking at the camera, turning it around the room, and leaving the camera alone again. Totally normal. But the strangest thing was there is about 5 minutes of empty space between the time stamp of the camera's normal footage and the time stamp of when I looked at the camera. It's possible that the camera just stopped working for a few minutes, but I've never seen that happen before.

If it wasn't for that little vigil I had on Reddit this morning, this wouldn't even be in my mind right now. My life is normal, and there's no reason to think that anything out of the ordinary happened last night.

But that little vigil...I just can't stop thinking about it.
