One night I had been working a night shift at my job back in 2006. I still lived with my parents in one of their two houses about 3 hours away from where I worked. I took a short cut home to save gas.

In order to take this short cut, I had to drive on some back roads that weren’t paved. You were still on county roads, but they were gravel and not paved. I had been down these roads many times and never really had a problem. It was already dark at this time.

About half way down one of the gravel roads, I saw a car pulled over. There were two people standing outside the car. They waived at me to pull over. At first I didn’t pull over, something just didn’t seem right. But they kept waiving. I finally decided to pull over and see what was going on. As I got closer I could tell it was a young couple probably early 20s. The girl was in front of the car waiving me down and the guy was in the back of the car watching me drive up.

I pulled up and rolled down my window. She walked up to the car and said they had ran out of gas and were wondering if I could give them a ride to the next gas station. She said it was a few miles down the road. I decided to let them in the car. I opened the back passenger side door and the guy jumps in. Before I could open the front passenger side door the girl had already opened it and jumped in.

I asked them where they were headed. The girl started to describe where they were headed but I had a bad feeling something was off because what she was saying didn’t sound right. I said hold on, I’ll pull over so I can hear you better. I pulled off the road a little so I could hear better. As I did, the guy in the back jumped out of the car and started to run away at full speed. I jumped out my door and ran around the car and grabbed the girl pulling her out of the car.

I asked her what she was doing and she said they were going to rob me. I asked her why she changed her mind. She said she saw me look at her in the rear view mirror and she saw how sad my eyes looked and she said something came over her and she had to stop it.

I finally got her to admit they didn’t have a car broke down but were just trying to rob someone. I asked her how long they had been out there. She said a few hours. I asked how many cars had passed and she said a few had slowed down but kept going. I asked her why they picked me and she said it was because I was a sad looking guy and I looked like an easy target.

I finally talked her into getting in the car and taking me to their car so I could see it. She directed me back the way I came and we found their car on the side of the road. After getting out of the car and looking around, I noticed there were several cars strategically placed on the road where the only direction you could go was straight. There was about 5 cars total and they were all parked on both sides of the road.

I asked her how many people were involved. She said there were about 8 total. I asked her if she was sure and she said yes. I told her that I had to go home and she could get back out on the road and find another sad guy. I dropped her back off at the original spot.

Names have been changed to protect any innocent people.

**EDIT:**
To everyone leaving comments that I should have went to the police: I work in a prison system and there is no such thing as a lock down. That being said, I have learned not to trust people. I didn’t feel comfortable leaving her alone in my vehicle with all of my information in there. She could have gotten my wallet and ran. But overall, people are too unpredictable and you never know what’s going to happen.
To everyone leaving comments that they are glad I picked them up: I’m glad I didn’t harm them either. But I still don’t know what was going to happen to me if they would have gone through with their plan. But I’m glad I gave them a chance to think about what they were doing.
To everyone leaving comments that I should have taken her to the gas station: It was the middle of the night. There weren’t any gas stations open. The nearest gas station would have been about 30 minutes away without traffic.
