So I’m Japanese, my parents immigrated to Canada when I was 6 years old, and now I reside in Japan since I’m there for work. I am fluent in both Japanese and English.

So I was recently applying for a job as a software engineer and technical support specialist in Japan and I got in an interview thinking everything would go smoothly. I walk to the conference room thinking I was about to get the job, but then I noticed the interviewer was looking very upset.

He said to me “listen, we’re not sure if we should hire you for the following reason” and I was thinking it was because I was a foreigner, and I was anticipating that. However, he said “I know you’re Japanese, but we’re not sure if we should hire you because you don’t act Japanese.” I was confused and I asked why he said that. He said “your answers were too concise and professional, in our Japanese corporate society, it’s very important to be able to have a conversation and be friendly with your coworkers. You speak very professionally, almost…too professionally. Also, when I was introducing you to the rest of my employees, you didn’t smile enough. And when I was showing you to your room, I noticed you were walking too fast. Also, another reason is that you kept responding to our questions in English instead of Japanese.”

I was very confused as to why he was saying this, because I thought responding and smiling professionally would be the norm… I asked him specifically why speaking English was a problem, and he said “because it feels too much like an interview. You shouldn’t act like that in our company. This is a very friendly place, to treat your coworkers in a professional matter is unheard of.” My mom later told me I should’ve just spoke Japanese, as Japanese corporate culture is very similar to a family, where everyone must get along and treat each other like family.

Anyways I got rejected from the job and I’m sad because I was planning on settling in Japan.

What do you think about this?
