The city has been spared large scale destruction and is currently in the hands of the occupying power for the foreseeable future. The occupying power (OP) has set up an administration in the city and is in the process of absorbing it into the nation.

With the change in administration the city has also changed hands from one faction to the other with many institutions remaining. I want to focus on how monuments, street names and memorials dedicated to the recently defeated nation are treated.

I am interested in hearing how these were treated in real life during or after the second world war as well as any good examples of this in popular media

edit: This is for an exercise in thinking about how the occupation of a large city plays out and how the occupying power might deal with former national symbols. Examples or views about real life history or conflicts are highly valued.
