GitHub wins lawsuit over AI code copying

A US court has ruled in favour of Microsoft-owned GitHub in a case about its AI code tool Copilot and copyright infringement.<br><br><br><br>The lawsuit claimed the AI tool had been trained on open-source code without permission. The AI tool can generate code to help developers complete tasks more quickly.<br><br><br><br>Open AI, the company behind ChatGPT, was also a defendant in the case.<br><br><br><br>The lawsuit was filed in 2022 by programmer and lawyer Matthew Butterick. He claimed that the tool generated code that could inflate costs and reduce the value of the code.<br><br><br><br>The filing claimed that Open AI and Microsoft had repurposed "millions of lines" of code without permission.<br><br><br><br>The code in question is taken from open-source repositories on GitHub. Open-source code allows developers to freely use, modify and share the code without needing to get permission from the original creators.
