The property line between our homes has exactly 3 inches leftover, no one knows why.

My sister first showed it to me when I was a kid, this was back in the 90's, when we bought our house that the surveyor had missed some random 3 inches of space in between our house and our neighbors. I remember it more for the 3 inches of lawn, that was left untouched by our lawn mower, or the neighbors lawn mower. It was like a little anomaly in the perfectly cut grass. In the 90's no one really cared much about it, you would every once and awhile hear our neighbors bring up how weird it was, but no one ever really cared about it.

The first time it really mattered was when I was older, as a teenager, the home owners association started cracking down on the houses in the neighborhood. Our neighbors didn't exactly take care of their home as much as the rest of us did, every other house on the street had these nice clean cut hedges out front, and beautiful grass, the neighbors yard had weeds, dead grass, and bushes that were growing up and down the sides of their houses.

They got fined, every other day, from the HOA, for as my dad called it " their lack of landscaping skills." They never bothered to clean up their yard, or cut the grass, even when they got fined. They would just pay the fine, and once or twice a month when they were feeling nice, they would get out their lawn mowers and mow the lawn. They had a ride on mower, and our yard is a lot bigger then theirs, they would cut the front, and maybe the side, but never the back. They didn't really care about having nice grass, I don't even think they ever ventured out into their back yard.

They would always just mow right up to the edge, leaving those three inches of lawn uncut. I asked them once why they didn't mow it, and their reply was "it's not our property, if you want to keep it up, you can mow it." So I never did, I had a ride on mower as well, and I was already cutting my entire lawn, I didn't need to also worry about the three inches, that were left behind.

As far as I know no one ever took the time to mow that small patch of grass, no one ever knew exactly why it was there, or who owned it, my property line ended before it, and so did my neighbors, so it was just sort of left out there. A weird little anomaly that no one ever bothered with. Occasionally I would see a small weed grow up from it, but it never grew very tall. I would just pull it out, and discard it.

I don't know why I took the time to mow it, but I did. I was out mowing the lawn, I was 30 at the time, had a kid of my own, my husband and I had bought my parents home, he had grown up just down the street, we had kind of met through my sister, all of our kids had grown up together, and we just sort of fell together, and ended up buying my childhood home.

As I was cutting the lawn, I decided to cut down the three inches as well, I had never done it before, but I figured it was time. I smiled to myself as I mowed that patch of land, and then continued on to mow the rest of my lawn. I didn't really think much of it, until I got inside and my husband was staring at me strangely.

"What?" I asked him.

"You never cut that patch of land." He replied.

"I know, I figured it was time."

He just shrugged and went back to watching TV. As the day went on I got more and more stressed out, all these weird things kept happening, but only to me, my daughter took a shower, and the water was warm, but not hot, which was strange, because our hot water usual lasts a long time before it runs out. I took a shower an hour after her, and it was still warm, so I just dealt with it. I tried to make some tea, I had a headache, and wanted to relax, but the stove wasn't working. Everything else in the house worked just fine, our lights, our TV, our computers, just the stove and hot water, were out.

My husband was busy with work, and my daughter was playing with her friends, and I was home alone. I called my sister, who lived just a few blocks away, and asked if I could take a shower at her house. My mom and dad were over there as well, as it was the weekend, they were visiting, and my daughter was at a friends house.

I went over, and took a long hot shower, and then we had dinner, I figured I would spend the night, since the stove and hot water were out. It wasn't a big deal, I figured it was a weird fluke, and it would get fixed in the morning. As we sat at the dinner table, my dad mentioned how he had no hot water, my husband texted me to say he had no hot water as well, and no stove, it was only my house that was affected.

When I got home the next morning, my hot water, and stove worked just fine. It was really weird, but I figured maybe the water got shut off, or something like that, I didn't care that much, since it had all gone back to normal.

It happened a few more times, and it always seemed to be related to me, every time I left the house, and was away from it for an extended period of time, it would happen, the stove would stop working, and the hot water would be gone. I started to get really annoyed, I went and talked to my neighbors, and they had never had the problem.

We went to a neighborhood meeting, to see if anyone else was having the same issue, and no one had ever had it happen before. Someone brought up the property line, that had been a problem since the 90s, and how it had never been resolved. A few people stepped up and offered to be lawyers, we decided as a collective to sue the previous owner of my home.

We figured that it would be really easy to get the prosecution to take our case, since it was a weird property dispute, that had went on for decades. The lawyer who had agreed to take our case, was shocked to hear back from the previous owner, who was now in his 80's, he lived in a nursing home, a few towns over. He said that he would come down and talk to us, and would like to resolve the issue as peacefully as possible.

He came down in a suit and tie, he was a portly man, and looked to be in good condition for his age.

"I ask of you, please, do not try to sue me, I have a very good reason for not giving anyone that property." He said. We all sort of looked at each other, and shrugged, since we were all retired, and had time to listen to him.

"I used to be a landscaper, and I sold that property as is, with the condition that the survey would be done to the specifications that I had given." He said. "I had landscaped that lawn for years, before the house was built, it was extra land, that no one was going to use, and I turned it into a beautiful little garden, I still remember the day I put the last flower in place."

"What does that have to do with anything?" I asked.

"I believe that the property is in fact haunted." He said. "Everything that I planted on that property line, died within the first week, I couldn't keep anything alive, except weeds, they would grow, and die, and grow again, I don't know what to tell you."

"That doesn't even make sense." My lawyer said.

"I know it doesn't, I can only tell you what I saw, and it was very strange, if you do end up taking that property, I hope you have better luck then I did. But I think you will find it's not worth it."

He got up and walked out, and that was it, no one else had really saw this happen, and we didn't really care about the property line, it was just an issue that we had decided we wanted to resolve, we didn't care if he was telling the truth or not. But we did end up dropping the case, and I went back to my normal life. But I would still get the weird hot water issue, it only happened a few more times, and I finally realized that it only happened if I cut that patch of land, I tested it, and it was true, every time I cut that patch of land, and was away from home for an extended period, my stove and hot water would go out.

I don't cut that patch of land anymore, and I don't really think about it, but I do find it strange, that it only happens to me, and only when I cut that land.
