I was mugged on the bus and the victim of a sting operation at the same time.

This happened a while ago, I don't remember the exact date.

I was walking home from work in the morning, with my earphones in and my phone in my back pocket. I took them out when I heard a bus coming because I didn't want to miss it. I really didn't feel like walking.

As I got on the bus and looked at my watch, I noticed there was a man sitting on a bench at the front of the bus who seemed out of place. I assumed he was a cop.

I sat down and a short while later the bus stopped. A man got on, looked around and came up to me. He was very drunk, and very clearly not a cop. I was expecting the guy to sit down and go back to sleep, but instead he started to ask me if I had a lighter. I was busy with my phone and said I'd get one for him later.

The bus stopped again, and he came back over to me. I still hadn't got a lighter for him.

I told myself I needed to get a lighter for him or else he'd get angry and rob me. So I got my phone out, to take a picture of the bus stop so that I could find my way back if he attacked me. Then, he suddenly looked at my phone, and snatched it from my hand.

He ran back to the doors and jumped off, and the bus sped off without him. I sat there in shock and ran down to the front of the bus to tell the man on the bench what had just happened.

He got off at the next stop, and we walked towards a shop. I told him what had just happened and asked if he had a phone I could borrow to call my mum and tell her I'd been mugged. He said I could borrow his phone.

He called the police for me, then called his colleagues to come and find the man who had stolen my phone. We walked around the block while they came and we waited at a phone box. Eventually, a car pulled up and two officers came over. I gave them a description of the man, and they thanked me for my time and drove off to look for him.

Then the officer came back and told me they'd found the man and arrested him, and he had another phone on him that matched the description of the one that had been stolen from another woman earlier that day in a different area of town.

I had given his phone number to my mum to call and tell me what was happening with my stolen phone. She had managed to track the location of the phone to a block of flats not far from where we were, and the police had already been to the flat and found another phone.

I thanked the officer and went back home. A week or so later I got my phone back, and the woman who had had her phone stolen also came to identify the man and thank the police.

I hope the man who stole my phone got some help for his alcohol problem and the woman got a new phone.
