My friend says he can only see in black and white. If that even is a thing.

I’ve been trying to get him to see a doctor about it for years. He won’t though. He says he’s happy this way.

I don’t get it. Everything’s better in color. But maybe that’s just me.

He called me up a few days ago, said he was staying at a new place and wanted me to check it out.

I pulled up to a dingy apartment complex. The walls were cracked and dirty, the paint chipped and faded. The two of us have never been rich, but this was by far the worst place he’s ever lived.

I honked the horn.

I saw movement in one of the windows, then my friend appeared in the door. He looked578my car up and down. I waved him over.

“Thanks man. I don’t have a car right now.” He said as he got in.

“Where are we going?”

“I’ve been thinking about this for a while. I might need your help.”

I furrowed my eyebrows, but he wouldn’t elaborate.

He gave me directions for a while. We drove past some rich neighborhoods, and after a while we were in an even fancier part of town than before. I whistled.

“Where did you find this place.”

“There was an ad on Craigslist. It was really cheap for what it is, so I’m guessing there’s something wrong with it. Maybe the previous tenant died there or something.”

I shook my head. “But you can’t see it.”

“There’s some trees and stuff nearby. Can’t miss it.”

I shrugged.

After a while, my friend pointed out a mansion. I pulled up to it.

“Can you see it?”

He shook his head. “No. But the ad said that the house was gray.”

The house was huge, with a large porch and two stories of windows. It was painted a clean white.

He shrugged. “Well, there’s your proof that it’s not all black and white.”

We got out and walked towards the door. I pointed out some brightly colored flowers on the way. He just grunted.

I knocked on the door. A butler answered. His black and white suit stood out against the door’s dark wood.

“Hello there, I’m here to look at the house.”

A smile spread across his face. “Of course, right this way.”

He led us through the house. The inside was just as nice as the outside, everything was incredibly clean and maintained. But apparently my friend couldn’t see any of it.

“Is this where-”

“Yes. The previous tenant did indeed pass away here.”

I looked at my friend. “Then why is it so cheap?”

The butler frowned. “Because of what happened.”

He hesitated.

“Because of what happened?”

“What happened to the previous tenant. I think you should know why the tenant died in case, you know.”

I shook my head. “Why the tenant?” I repeated.

The butler was silent.

“Tell me why the tenant died.”

The butler looked at my friend. My friend shook his head.

“Can you see that?” He asked.

I looked where he was pointing. “See what?”

“There’s something on the wall over there. Right next to the staircase.”

I followed his gesture. “There’s nothing.”

He frowned, then looked at the butler. The butler was silent.

“Did you send him a picture of the house?” My friend asked.

“Yes. But only the inside.”

“Then how did you know where the house was if you couldn’t see it from the outside?”

My friend looked at me. “You said there were trees nearby, right?”

I shook my head. “No, I didn’t.”

“What’s going on?” He asked.

The butler didn’t answer.

“It was you that posted the ad, wasn’t it?”

The butler nodded. “I did. And I also showed you the way here.”

“My friend and I were just talking about our apartments. Neither of us said anything about houses.”

The butler was silent.

“You can see color, can’t yo?”

The butler nodded. “Yes, I can.”

My friend took a step back. “You can’t see color, but you can see me?”

“I can’t see color, but I can see you.”

“Make sense, you dumb asshole.”

“I-”

“Why did the tenant die?”

“What’s that on the staircase?”

The butler looked at my friend, then at me, then back to my friend. “Is that not your brother?”

I furrowed my eyebrows, then turned to see what the butler was talking about. My brother was standing on the staircase. He was hugging himself and staring at the floor.

“George?”

He didn’t respond.

“George, what’s wrong?”

He slowly looked up at me. His expression was blank. The skin on his face was torn and bloody. There were red smudges on his cheeks.

Red.

I shook my head. No, they were black. My friend could see them, and he could only see in black and white. But if my brother was really there, then he could only see in black and white too.

My brother slowly started descending the stairs. His legs were twisted and deformed. After a few steps he fell onto the floor. He slowly got up and kept walking.

As he walked closer, I could see more of his body. It was covered in wounds. Something must have killed him.

But that was crazy talk. He was standing right in front of me.

George slowly got closer. With each movement, his body made a sickening squelching sound.

“Brother, what’s going on?”

He didn’t respond. He just kept walking.

A black liquid slowly fell out from under his shirt and onto the floor. I felt like puking.

My friend stepped forward.

“George, I-”

George slowly looked up at my friend, then he started moving towards him.

My friend took a step back.

“George.”

My friend slowly started backing away.

George slowly moved closer.

My friend turned and ran. He went out the front door, into the entrance of the garage.

George crawled after him, leaving a trail of black liquid on the floor. My friend slammed the garage door on George, but he slowly started forcing it open.

My friend slowly backed away, tripping over his own feet.

I slowly moved closer.

He looked up at me, then he saw me. Really saw me. “Brother.”

I slowly reached out and touched his face.

He didn’t respond. He was too busy trying to force the garage door closed.

I slowly bunched up his shirt.

“Brother.”

I slowly lifted him up, and he slowly stopped trying to force the door closed. Slowly but surely, he realized that I was right in front of him.

Slowly but surely, the realization hit him. I had been dead for years.

He slowly struggled as I carried him back into the house, fighting to get out of my grasp. I slowly carried him up the stairs to his bedroom.

Slowly but surely, the fight went out of him. Slowly but surely, he fell limp.

Slowly but surely, I threw him out the window.

Slowly but surely, I heard the sickening sound of him hitting the ground.

I slowly walked down the stairs, into the entrance. I slowly saw my brother, slowly crawling towards me.

I slowly went back outside, to where my friend had parked.

My friend wasn’t there. I slowly started walking towards the street, but he was nowhere in sight.

I slowly started walking down the street, calling out my friend’s name. He didn’t respond.

I slowly walked for hours, calling my friend’s name at the top of my lungs.

I slowly lost my voice.

I slowly went back to the house, and I slowly broke in through the window.

I slowly went back upstairs to my bedroom, and slowly layed in bed. I slowly fell asleep.

Slowly but surely, the next morning came.

I slowly got out of bed, and slowly went down to the kitchen. The butler was there, slowly sweeping up a puddle of blood.

I slowly walked over to him. “Where’s my friend?”

He slowly looked up at me. Slowly but surely, he realized that something was wrong.

Slowly but surely, I realized that something was wrong.

I slowly looked down at my clothes. They slowly came into view. Slowly but surely, the color came into view.

It wasn’t black.

It was red.

I slowly looked up at the butler. Slowly but surely, I realized that something was wrong.

Slowly but surely, the butler realized that something was wrong.

He slowly started to run.
