When an elderly person dies after a long illness, people often say he was a "fighter". I don't think there is anything he could've done to fight his illness and the death, therefor I think the phrase is more just a myth, a memory of positive things to say after a person died.

For example, my grandma died recently after her kidneys failed. She was unwell for 2 years, then recovered, then again unwell for a year and a half. The entire time we were told she was days from death, but she lived for 3 years. But after her kidneys failed her, she was only given oxygen and was left to die. So clearly she couldn't even fight for 1 week without oxygen, how could she possibly fight for 3 years? She was so weak she could barely move out of the bed.

I know a lot of people, including my mom, would disagree with me on this.
