Why is anime over the past decade so fixated on "dougen"?

It seems to me that nearly every modern anime features these bland, unimposing male protagonists that always somehow find themselves surrounded by girls. My mind immediately goes to Re:Zero, as it's one of the most egregious examples of this. I genuinely cannot think of a single character trait about the protagonist of Re:Zero. From my perspective, he doesn't even have a face. I couldn't describe him to you.

This archetype is relatively absent in anime from before the 2010s.Whats going on here?
