Creepy hotel encounter that I still think about 10+ years later.

This happened back in 2007 when I was 22 years old. I had just gotten off a 12 hour shift of construction work and decided to go stay at a hotel. At the time, I had been struggling with alcoholism. I was a pretty heavy drinker and was having a hard time cutting back.

I remember checking into the hotel and getting my room assignment and key card. I went up the elevator to my assigned floor and walked down the hall to my assigned room. I opened the door and turned to walk in when a man inside yelled "What the F are you doing?!" I turned to see a very obviously drunk man who had been lying in the bed staring at me. I immediately backed up, turned around and walked back to the elevator and rode it down to the lobby. I went to the front desk and told them that there was somebody in my hotel room and could they please help me. The woman behind the desk looked like a deer in the headlights and didn't say anything. She just kept looking at me. I asked her if she was going to call security or the police or something and she finally responded. She told me to go back upstairs and apologize to the man. I was confused as I wasn't the one who had been drunk and in his bed. I told her that I wasn't going back upstairs and she could not have a room key made for me. I left the hotel and went to another one across the street.

I have often wondered about that encounter. What was the story behind it and if it was staged for some sick reason.
