The Roman Empire is arguably one of the greatest empires of human history, although, it wasn't invincible. By 180 AD, the Roman Empire was one of the largest empires ever seen, and had overcome countless wars, plagues, and emperors. However, all of this was undone when, in 235 AD, Rome was besieged by the Goths in the “Year of the Five Emperors.” The empire was eventually broken up into three empires: Rome, Egypt, and Palmyra, and was forever changed. The legacy of Rome also declined, with the empire only going on another 200 years until Odoacer defeated the last Western Roman Emperor in 476 AD.

However, what if there was no civil war? What if there had been no division between the empires? What if the empire had survived, and continued its legacy?

The first major change is that the empire never divides. It is instead ruled by multiple emperors, who each take over their own province, and co-operate with the other emperors to make decisions for Rome. This would have prevented the civil war in the first place. The empire would have also been able to quell the ability of the Goths to invade by working in tandem and using the large legions of the east to help the west.

The second major change is that the empire now has a motive to expand into Germania and Persia. In the past, the empire had never expanded into these territories because they offered little spoils. But now, with no internal conflicts, Rome has no major problems to deal with but the Goths and Vandals. This would prove to be a smart decision, as the Goths would never again become a major threat to Rome.

The third change is the survival of the Roman Empire. With the extra provinces, and the economic reform provided by Diocletian, Rome would have become an unstoppable force. The empire would have gone on for many more centuries, potentially even until the present day.

Alternate History of the Roman Empire
Year Event
180 AD Roman Empire expands into North Africa.
