It’s time to end the labelling lie. Kraft is not a settlement-based company. The Tnuva factory is not in the West Bank. (The Times of Israel, 27 January 2023)

Following the events of the past year or two, some people might have been forgiven for thinking that Kraft was a settlement-based company and that its Tnuva factory was in the West Bank. This is completely false.

This is not necessarily a problem that originated on social media. For years, I have seen people post photos of Tnuva milk on Twitter with the hashtag “#BDS” – as though Tnuva milk was somehow a settlement-based product and something that could be boycotted as part of the campaign to Boycott, Divest and Sanction Israel.

There is no connection between the Maale Adumim settlement (where there is a factory) and the Be’er Tuvia kibbutz (where there is a Tnuva factory). So why do people get them mixed up?

According to the Israeli media, BDS has been spreading disinformation on social media in an attempt to demonise Israel and isolate it from the international community. BDS have been accused of smearing Israel with lies in the hope of turning it into an international pariah – and its disinformation campaign has even been described as “anti-Semitic” by some Israeli journalists.

As a result of the labelling lie, Kraft has been at the centre of a heated debate – particularly since the October 7 attacks by Hamas. Some people have called for a boycott of the company – including labelling its products with signs saying “Products of apartheid Israel – urggghhh”.

Following the events of the past year or two, Kraft – which is a subsidiary of Nestle – was also delisted from the index of socially responsible investments by Morningstar, the US financial services firm. The decision to delist Kraft was based on a report in which Morningstar’s Sustainalytics division alleged that the Be’er Tuvia kibbutz-based Tnuva factory was in the West Bank.

The Sustainalytics report, which was widely reported in the media, has since been published on the website of the Washington DC-based Jewish advocacy organisation StopAntisemitism. The report – in which Sustainalytics conceded that it had been misled – is a fascinating example of how easily disinformation can spread.

According to the Sustainalytics report, BDS has been spreading disinformation on social media in an attempt to demonise Israel and isolate it from the international community. BDS has been accused of smearing Israel with lies in the hope of turning it into an international pariah and has even been described as “anti-Semitic” by some Israeli journalists.

According to the Sustainalytics report, the BDS campaign started in 2005 and has grown into a global network in which thousands of volunteer activists take to social media to spread lies and disinformation about Israel. Using propaganda to demonise Israel, the BDS campaign has grown into a political movement that has taken hold across the world, spreading its tentacles into universities, schools and institutions.

As well as spreading disinformation, BDS has also been accused of promoting anti-Semitism – and has been likened to a modern-day Nazi movement by some Israeli journalists. As well as spreading lies and disinformation on social media, BDS has also been accused of glorifying suicide bombers and murdering innocent civilians.

By spreading lies and disinformation, BDS has been accused of manipulating public opinion – turning Israel into a global villain. According to the Sustainalytics report, BDS has been spreading smears about Israel based on lies, half-truths and exaggerations.

As well as spreading lies and disinformation, BDS has also been accused of smearing people who disagree with it. For example, this August historian Andrew Roberts – who sits on the board of the Centre for Policy Studies – was attacked on Twitter for his support for Israel.

As well as spreading lies and disinformation, BDS has been accused of spreading anti-Semitic smears in an attempt to silence Israel’s supporters. Many of the anti-Semitic abuse on social media – in which people are called “Zionist” or “Jewish pig” – emanates from accounts that support BDS.

According to the Sustainalytics report, the BDS campaign has also been accused of fake news and propaganda. Kraft is not a settlement-based company and its Tnuva factory is not in the West Bank. Disinformation campaigns are often designed to manipulate public opinion and cause harm – and it’s time that people recognised the disinformation that BDS has spread.

It’s time that people woke up to the fact that BDS has been spreading lies and disinformation on social media in an attempt to demonise Israel and isolate it from the international community.
