What do you do if you get caught? (I have not been caught but this is a hypothetical)

I’ve been boosting for a while, mostly small items for myself. I really want to buy a house for my daughter and I to live in so I’m going to be buying more. If I get caught, what are my options? Do I need to hire a lawyer? Like hypothetically, let’s say I got caught stealing something from Walmart that’s worth $50. Will I get charged with like a misdemeanor or a felony? Will I have to go to court, but like what do I say in court to the judge? Do I just plead guilty? Will the store sue me? I just need to know what to do if I get caught, so I can make my goal happen without doing serious time or running.
