If you ordered something more expensive than them, the appropriate response is, "I ordered the filet mignon, do you want me to pay for mine separately?"

I once had a guy order the most expensive thing on the menu and then want to split the bill. I am a small woman and don't eat much and I ordered the appetizer sampler. I ended up asking him to pay for his own meal because I didn't want to be stuck with a huge bill.

Another time, my friends and I went out to dinner and one of them ordered a bottle of wine. When we were done, we asked to split the bill. We all got the same thing, salmon, except him, he ordered caviar. When the bill came, it was obviously more than we expected. We asked why and he said, "The caviar is $40 an ounce." We asked him if he wanted to pay for the caviar separately and he also said, "No," because, "You guys had appetizers, and we can just split the bill."

This is a life pro tip because no one likes to talk about money. It's awkward. You don't want to seem cheap, especially in front of coworkers or if you're on a first date. However, I would have rather been seen as cheap than stuck with a huge bill.

EDIT: I've never split a bill with less than three people, so the math was easy. Seperate the total by the number of people. If the total divided by the number of people is more than you ordered, ask if anyone wants to pay for their meal separately.
