I’m an intern at a hospital. I work the night shift at the front desk.

It’s a quiet job. Most of my duties are things like printing out the next day’s weather forecast, putting on the coffee, and putting out the trash. The nurses work a 12 hour shift, and usually when they work over, they stay at the nurse’s lounge at the back of the hospital.

I have my own desk to work at in the main part of the hospital.

I work by myself. No one else is there during the night, unless I need to call in someone (usually in an emergency)

One of my biggest duties was to keep the copier going. We used a lot of copies. Usually I would run it in the morning, and then go back at night and do it again.

I also needed to make sure it had a lot of tape. Usually we’d need to print out patient’s charts, lab reports, etc.

One of the nurses would always text me at the end of their shift to let me know they’re done.

I had just gotten off the phone with one of them when the hospital alarm went off. We use it when there’s been an accident, and someone’s been injured.

I immediately jumped up and turned off the alarm, and called the paramedics (because the person injured wasn’t a patient. It was one of our staff members.

I ran to the nurse’s lounge and found one of our nurse’s bleeding pretty badly. It was bad enough that he lost a lot of blood. They took him to the ER, and I was asked to get a nurse to cover for him.

I got on the phone, called up a few nurses to see if anyone could come cover for the one in the ER, and then started making the copies.

I had the copier running, the printer going, I was at my desk making notes, when the chief of the hospital called me.

I was shaking a little bit when I got on the phone. I hate it when people get hurt.

I answered the phone, and he said he was on his way to the hospital.

He said he heard what happened, and he wanted to make sure everything was okay.

I said I was fine. The paramedics were there. I just needed to get someone to come and cover the nurse who was hurt.

I said I was asking a few people, and if they couldn’t come, I would need to go over to another hospital and beg someone to cover it.

The chief said “Who’s on now?”

I told him there was someone, but he had just left.

He said “Well, I guess that means I’m covering his shift. I’ll be there in a few minutes.”

I said “Okay, thanks, I appreciate it”

He said “No problem, don’t worry about it”

I said “I’ll meet you at the front desk, thanks again”

I got off the phone, and thought I would wait until he got there to cover the nurse. So I cleaned up all the machines, and went over to sit at the front desk to wait for him.

I looked at the clock, and realized he was taking a while to get there. I thought that was weird, since he said he was just a few minutes away, but I thought he was just taking his time.

I sat down, and waited. I got more and more irritated as the minutes ticked by. I thought maybe he changed his mind, and decided not to come.

I got up and went to the car park to wait for him, but he wasn’t there. I decided to go back and keep working, and figured maybe I’d have to call someone else.

I walked back into the hospital, and when I got to the front desk, I saw my purse wasn’t there. I was sure I had it before, because I had my phone inside, and I always keep my money and keys in my purse.

I went to my locker, but my purse wasn’t there. I panicked a little bit and tore the hospital looking for it. I checked in the locker rooms, the nurse’s lounge, even the supply closet.

I still hadn’t found it, so I went back to sit at my desk.

I realized that the chief hadn’t called me back to say he was running late. And he said he was going to meet me at the front desk.

I thought it was strange, and decided to call him. I pulled my phone out of my purse to make the call, but my purse was still nowhere to be found.

I called my best friend, who works at another hospital, and told her I couldn’t find my purse. She said to look in the supply closet.

I was skeptical, but I went to check it out. And when I opened the door, my purse was on a shelf in the back of the closet.

I was so relieved to have found it, and I closed the door and went back to my desk. I picked up my phone to call my friend and thank her, but I realized I still hadn’t heard from the chief.

I called him again, and went to voicemail. I left a message saying I found it in the supply closet, and that I would go cover the nurse.

I hung up and grabbed my things, and went to the nurse’s station.

When I walked in, I saw him. He was sitting at the nurse’s desk, and he had my keys in his hand.

He said “Where have you been?”

I said “I was looking for my purse. I couldn’t find it anywhere.”

He said “Well now that you have it, I think you should go and cover the shift.”

I was confused. He had called me to cover the shift? But he was a doctor, not a nurse. And he couldn’t work the shift, because it was his shift off. He’s a doctor, not a nurse.

I asked him “Are you sure? You can’t cover it yourself?”

He said “I’m sure. Just go and cover it.”

I said “Okay” and walked out the door.

I drove home in a daze. I was confused. I was sure I had left my purse at work. And I was sure I hadn’t left it in the supply closet.

I got home, and looked everywhere to find it. I tore my apartment. I looked in every single room, and I still couldn’t find it.

I called my friend again, and told her I still couldn’t find it. She said maybe I should ask someone at work. I thought that was a good idea, but the hospital was already closed.

I tried to call one of my coworkers, but no one answered. I gave up and went to bed, hoping I would find it the next day.

The next day, I went to work, and of course I brought my purse with me. I made sure of it. And when I got to my desk, I saw my purse sitting there. It was right next to my chair.

I thought maybe I had forgotten it there the night before. I was so tired, I guess.

I got on the phone and called the chief to thank him for watching over it for me.

It went straight to voicemail. I left a message, and then started my work.

I worked all morning, until my lunch break. I decided to go home early, since I didn’t have any work to do.

When I walked in the front door of my apartment, I saw my purse on the couch.

I thought “Where did that come from?”

I realized I didn’t bring it with me. I left it at work. And I’m positive I didn’t bring it back with me.

I looked around the apartment, but I still couldn’t find it. I even tore my room. I couldn’t find it anywhere.

I sat on the couch, and looked at it. And then I looked at my hands. I didn’t see anything. I went to the bathroom and washed my hands, and still couldn’t find it.

I had a strange feeling. I decided to go back to work, and ask my coworker where my purse was.

I got back to work, and walked in the door. I saw it sitting on my chair. I asked my coworker “Where was this last night?”

She said “I found it on my desk last night. I thought maybe you left it there when you were getting the copier going.”

I said “I wasn’t doing the copier last night.”

She said “I thought maybe I should put it on your desk, but I forgot.”

I said “That’s okay.”

And then I said “I thought I left my purse at home last night.”

She said “You did.”

I said “What do you mean?”

She said “You left it at home. You didn’t bring it to work.”

I said “I know that.”

She said “Then where did it come from?”

I was shocked, and didn’t answer. I didn’t know what to say.

I asked her “Did he come to work last night?”

She said “Yes. He was really worried about you.”

I said “Really? I didn’t see him.”

She said “Oh. No. He never came to the front desk.”

I said “Where did he go?”

She said “He went to the supply closet.”

I said “He did?”

She said “Yes. I saw him go.”

I said “And then he came out and left?”

She said “Yes. He came out and left.”

I asked her “What did he say when he left?”

She said “He said he was going home.”

I asked her “And did he say anything to you?”

She said “No, he didn’t.”

I said “Okay. Well, I think I’m going to go home.”

I left, and didn’t say anything else. I
