Why do people let their children smack them in the face and/or knock their glasses off and stuff?

I’m sorry but if I ever did that to my parents when I was a small child, I would have gotten a whupping of a lifetime. You’re patting this baby on the back and letting it smack you in the face but when they’re about 14 and act like an asshole, you’re trying to get in their face. What?
