Is anime more for children?

This is a question I get from people who have never watched anime before and many of whom aren't too interested in the genre. I have noticed that it is becoming a more mainstream source of entertainment however I am still get this question from people who have never really watched a series before. This is likely down to the lack of awareness of anime on top of preconceived notions.
