In desperation, he went to a bar and ordered ten beers. Prior to drinking them, however, he wrote a suicide note and left it on the table. After finishing all ten beers, he intended to hang himself in the nearby forest. However, when he was ready to leave the bar, he found that he didn't have enough money to pay for the beers. The farmer asked the bar owner if he could pay him the next day, but the owner refused, because he knew that the farmer had no source of income and regularly came to the bar to beg for alcohol. The bar owner thought that the farmer was simply begging for free booze yet again. In a last-ditch effort, the farmer offered to sing them a song in exchange for a debt pardon.
