What did a typical inner city look like in the 1960s US?

I see a lot of videos of crappy parts of cities in the 1960s US, with trash all over the streets and whatnot, but how common was that in the cities? Was that the norm or just the crappy parts?<br>If you look at videos of old NYC you see some crappy buildings, but everyone seems to be doing alright and the streets don't look like dumps.
