How did we go from "hidden" or "unseen" histories, to "unseen" histories being all about the sex lives of people in the past?

I'm getting a bit tired of seeing articles from reputable sources, like the BBC doing articles about the sex lives and the sexualities of historical people. I'm not saying there should never be any articles about those kinds of things, but sometimes it feels like it's all attempting to shoehorn everyone into a modern box in a way that is ahistorical - i.e. trying to shoehorn historical people into modern labels for sexuality, which are probably not accurate for someone living in an entirely different time. I don't see how it could possibly be historic to apply a modern label to someone who lived in the 19th century for example. Especially famous people, like Abraham Lincoln, King James, Shakespeare. Can someone please explain to me why this is so important, I genuinely don't get it.
