Chambers

I'm not the one who killed the dog. (Throwaway because I haven't got a chambersor name I like yet.)

A couple of months ago I was invited to an after work drinks party. This was with a large company, so it was in a big office and there were a lot of people there, far too many for the small tables we were supposed to sit at.

I am a shy person and don't know many people, so I sat at a table by myself. This was no problem as there was enough space to spread out and there were a few other lone wolves there too. As I was sitting there, I noticed a girl around my age (mid-twenties) who was also sitting alone. It seemed like a good opportunity to chat her up, so I made small talk and we got to talking.

For some reason I assumed she was a secretary or something with the company, she was dressed professionally and there was a business card on the table in front of her, so we chatted a little bit about the company. She told me that she was there for an interview.

We had a brief conversation and then another girl came over to our table and introduced herself as her friend. We included her in our conversation and I was introduced to her as well. She told me that I could call her by whatever name I liked because we were going to be working together soon. I thought that was kind of a weird thing to say, but I just smiled and went along with it. I'll call the first girl Sasha for this story and the other girl Victor.

I asked where Sasha and Victor worked. Sasha was working in London, while Victor was in New York. They worked for the same company. Sasha was a few steps ahead of me in the corporate ladder, so she was going to be the one I would be reporting to. I was also told that we would be working closely together and might as well be considered a couple because we would be spending so much time together. This seemed a little strange to me, but I just went along with it.

I continued talking to both of them and then I realised I hadn't drank my beer yet. So I took a few sips and continued talking. Before long my beer was gone and I really wanted a cigarette, so I excused myself and stepped outside for a smoke.

I stood outside and smoked and drank the rest of my beer. After my beer was gone, I felt pretty tipsy and I realised I hadn't eaten anything all day. I decided to go back inside for some food, so I took a few steps towards the door. But a voice behind me said, "Where do you think you're going?" I turned around and saw Sasha and Victor standing in the door way. Sasha said, "You can't go in there without an ID." I looked at her confused and asked what the fuck she was talking about.

Then I realised that I had been drinking my beer and smoking outside and I had no idea how much time had passed. The venue was a pub and they had one of those big events where they sectioned the room off and you had to show an ID to get back in because they wanted to make sure nobody who was too drunk got behind the wheel. I didn't know what to do, so I said, "Call my boyfriend, he's got an ID, he can let me in." Sasha just looked at me disapprovingly. Victor chimed in, "You're too drunk to drive anyway."

So Sasha called a taxi and I got in it. They paid the taxi driver so I had no idea how I was going to pay them back. I passed out in the taxi and when I came to I was back at my house. My boyfriend had let me in and I remember feeling a bit annoyed that he let me in even though I was drunk. I remember feeling a little strange that Sasha and Victor had brought me home, but I thought it was nice of them and I probably thanked them. I remember nothing else until the next morning.

The next day I woke up with a pounding headache and a voicemail from Sasha. She left a message saying she picked up my phone from my house and asked me to call her back. So I called her up. I told her what happened and that I didn't remember anything. She said don't worry, it's not a big deal, and we'll talk about it later. Then she hung up the phone. I thought that was a little weird, but I assumed she just wanted to avoid talking about it in front of my boyfriend.

Later on that day I got another call from her, but this time she sounded pissed off. She said, "Did you tell your boyfriend about last night?" I asked her what she was talking about and she said what I did last night. I told her that I didn't remember anything and she said that I couldn't go there, I can't go out like that, I can't drink that much, I can't go home with strangers. I told her that I didn't go home with a stranger, my boyfriend let me in, and I didn't remember anything anyway. Then she hung up the phone again.

The next day I got a call from my boss and she told me that I had to come into work early because of some issues with my file and I had to go over some things with Sasha. I got to work a little early and she was already there, sitting at her desk. I sat down next to her and asked her what was going on, why did my boyfriend get a call from her last night? She looked at me with a shocked expression and asked what my boyfriend had to do with anything. Then she asked me if I remember anything from the other night. I told her that I didn't remember anything and she started freaking out.

She started saying that she can't work with me, I'm not responsible, I can't remember things. Then she started asking me where I was the other night and I told her the truth, I went to a pub after work. She said, "No, after you left." I said, "I don't know, I was kicked out of the pub, a guy had to drive me home." She started freaking out again and then my boss came over and asked what was going on. Sasha told her that I had gone out and gotten drunk, then came back to the office and caused problems. My boss asked her to elaborate and Sasha said that I went to the pub and came back and started causing problems and making a scene.

My boss looked at me and asked me if that's what happened and I told her no. I said that I didn't cause any problems, I was kicked out of the pub and a girl had to pay for a taxi so I could get home. Then she looked at Sasha and asked her if that's what happened and Sasha started freaking out again. Then my boss asked me if I was going to be able to work with Sasha, I just told her that I would have to try.

Then she told me to go home and take the day off because I wasn't in any fit state to work with her. I said okay and left work early. After that I didn't really interact with her anymore. A few weeks later she got a job in another city and had to move away and I never really found out what happened that night. But a few months later I heard that the police were looking for a woman who had killed a dog by throwing it out of a moving taxi. I couldn't stop thinking about it.

I realised that night that Sasha must have done something terrible. I didn't want to think about it too much, but I couldn't get rid of the feeling. A few months later I saw the story again. This time it included a picture of Sasha. She had been caught on CCTV throwing the dog out of the taxi and she was sentenced to time in prison. I felt relieved that I didn't have to work with her anymore. And I felt relieved that I didn't actually do something terrible that night.

I still can't get over the feeling that something was a bit off about her. But I guess you never really know someone. I guess we all have secrets.
