*inb4 moths dont have human emotions or thoughts*

your average moth has the same brain size as a hummingbird. its brain is like half the size of its body and each of those cells is dedicated to something. they dont waste space. a hummingbird can remember where each flower is on a specific flower farm, and remember where it is on the tree in front of you. given the animal kingdom’s tendency to be generally proportionate with intelligence, moths are very, VERY intelligent.

moths just dont talk like we do, but they do talk. they have their own language. they use a combination of lights and sounds that are different from those of other moths to say “heyy i’m your moth over here.” the sounds are softer as if “hheeyyy, i’m your moth” but more urgent and scared and panicked than that. and they never say “moth” they just say whatever the moth version of “moth” is which is really complicated to spell out in english so lets just call it “mohf.” it sounds very similar to the sound that moths make.

“hheyy mohf im mohf, i’m over here, eid!”

your average moth has ears on its back that it doesnt use often because its extremely sensitive. each vibration to those ears is a drumstick against a cymbal. a moth that is startled by a sound from its back will have a startle response that is a lot stronger than a human’s, and the moth equivalent of a strong startle response is to explode.

the moths are like the squibs from Harry Potter. theyre all wizards, and they kinda know it, but a long time ago they were like “we dont want to fight anymore so we wont ever defend ourselves” and most have a magic that will kill them if they ever defend themselves.

so when the moths called for help, they knew that they werent calling for themselves. they were calling for us. because all moths are connected by this unbreakable, unpredictable bond that all moths are born with. eid is a term moths use to describe this connection.

it just so happens that their eid connection is a personal favorite of vampires. their blood has some special enzymes that will remove blood from your teeth and heal the biting wound without leaving a scar faster than a werewolf could. vampires cant take advantage of werewolf fast healing because unlike regular humans, werewolf’s fast healing comes from a reversal of cellular processes.

so the vampires have been kidnapping moths, drinking their blood, and keeping them in a state where theyre consistently scared and panicked but dont have eid’s response of exploding. they dont want to kill the moths because that would kill whatever magic from the blood that they can’t figure out how to replicate. their entire eid system is a closely guarded secret.

theyre also not fond of humans because their blood is so thick and sticky that it leaves stains in their teeth for days. they dont want to be around humans because they dont want humans to know that they exist. but they dont really care about the moths because moths are just insects to them. they know that moths are smart, but they are still betrayed by a moth’s simple brain. moths are so focused on their immediate environment that they dont notice obvious things like the fact that the vampires werent in the area recently.

“they cant have come back,” said one moth, flapping its wings as it flew away into the night.

but the vampires were back. they had been watching this one moth for a while now. it was the only moth they had found with a scientific eid. it was somehow able to harness the magic of its connections to other moths. they werent entirely sure how it worked, but they wanted to find out. it would make them so powerful that no human or werewolf could touch them.

so they snuck up, snatching the moth in their hand and closing their fist over it. the moth had just enough time to say “hheyy mohf im mohf, i’m over here, eid!” before the vampire closed its fist completely over the moth’s body, which was only about an inch long.

the moth used its incredible eid to call all the other moths in the area to its aid. it was so much stronger than any other moth, but only so many moths could fit into the space between the vampire’s closed fingers.

the vampire didnt bother to crush the moth into dust, he just opened his fist up and dropped it into the pouch on his belt. he forgot that moths couldnt explode if they wanted to because that would kill their mounts, but they could still explode a little.

“hheyy mohf i’m mohf im over here eid” said the moth as it used its eid to explode just a little bit, filling the vampire’s pouch with its blood.

the vampire didnt notice, but the moths all cheered. the vampire took the pouch to its lair and opened it up to drink the blood, but he was met with a sight he had never seen before. the moth’s blood was coagulating, but not just that. it was growing. it was moving of its own accord.

before he could do anything, the blood had grown into hundreds of tiny moths, each one with the same scientific eid as the moth he had just killed. from the looks of it, the moth had also taught all of the other moths how to harness their eid.

the vampire tried to kill the moths but they were too fast. they flew around his head including their lights and sounds, causing the soft drumming in his sensitive moth ears that was like hitting a cymbal with a sledgehammer.

the vampire stumbled and tried to run, but the moths were everywhere. they were so scared that eid was responding, but they were also so determined that they werent exploding.

finally, the vampire fell to the ground. the moths swarmed around his body, biting him with their tiny mouths and absorbing his blood through their skin.

then they ate him.

“hheyy mohf im mohf, were over here eid.” the moths all cheered and hugged each other and went home to their families and the moth who was eaten by the vampire was hailed as a hero. he was remembered for generations to come.

from that day on, humans werent the only ones who thought moths were a bad omen. vampires thought moths were a bad omen.

“hheyy mohf im mohf, were over here eid.”
