France orders Google to pay €593 million to news sites in copyright row

France has ordered Google to pay €593 million (£510 million) to news publishers to use their material. <br><br>France’s competition authority fined Google for failing to negotiate “in good faith” with news organisations. <br><br>Google has two months to come up with fresh proposals for payment or face a further €900,000 daily fine. <br><br>The tech giant said it was “very disappointed” by the decision but was “studying it and evaluating the next steps”. <br><br>France is the first EU member state to implement a “neighbouring right” introduced into EU copyright law.<br><br>In effect, this gives publishers a legal right to be paid when extracts from their articles appear in search results. <br><br>The BBC understands the fine is the largest ever imposed by the regulator and may have implications for how Google operates beyond France.
