What if your neighbor isn’t who you think they are?

This happened over 10 years ago now, but it still scares me to think about. My husband and I were living in a small house in the suburbs with a fairly large yard. It was mostly open except for a couple of large trees on one corner and a small 6 foot privacy fence along the back.

The neighbors to our north had a large picket fence and a little garden. The neighbors to our south had a similar fence and a bigger garden. To our east, we had a small park that backed up to an apartment complex. To our west, we had the aforementioned large trees and a small patch of overgrown weeds. We couldn’t see the house behind the trees, but we could hear the loud parties on weekends.

Well one night we woke up at around 3 am to what sounded like a car backfiring. Except it went on for about 10 minutes. I was getting ready to call the cops when my husband said “I think its our neighbor”. I was confused and asked “what neighbor?” He pointed towards the trees and I looked over towards the woods separating us from the apartment complex.

There was a man standing out in the middle of the woods, right next to the trees, shooting a gun into the ground. He didn’t seem to be aiming at anything in particular, just kind of shooting randomly. We watched for a few minutes to make sure we weren’t seeing things, then called the cops.

When the police arrived they searched the area and found two more guns, a few bullets, a knife and a bag of cocaine. The man was arrested and charged with various gun charges and drug possession. It turned out he was living in the apartments and was using our house as a hideout so the apartment complex wouldn’t find out. He was hiding the guns in the woods so the cops wouldn’t find them. We never saw him again. The parties stopped and we never found out what happened to him.

*
