Why did the US fight & die in Vietnam, when they had no intention of staying?

I understand the whole 'dominos' argument, protecting surrounding countries. Why did they send ground troops? <br><br>Why didn't they just sit back and bomb the communists with air strikes? Why did they think it was important enough to sacrifice hundreds of thousands of American lives?
