I don't understand why Attack on Titan is so popular

I've never been this baffled by an anime's popularity. I'm currently in the middle of season 3 and while I don't hate the anime, I don't think it's good. I don't really see why it's this popular. <br><br>The story is extremely formulaic. A wall is breached, titans flood in, the characters fight and win at great cost. Meanwhile all the other characters side plot that has been going on for the past 10 episodes is rendered irrelevant by the ending. The plot is predictable and I've not really had any surprises in my time watching AoT. The characters are also really cookie cutter and are archetypes and the most annoying part about this show is the dialogue. It seems like every character just says the exact same annoyingly word for word in every dialogue. Like for example all the characters say "There's no time, we have to ________ now". Like you see Mikasa say that, Eren says that, Levi says that, etc. It just seems unrealistic how much they repeat the same exact phrases to each other. And then there's the "I'm going to kill all the titans" dialogue which is even worse. Erens just a whiny mopey character who just repeats the same line every time he gets into battle. It's so fucking annoying.
