Why ketchup was so ‘popular’ at my summer camp when I first moved to the US

I will apologize before hand since I have no clue how to articulate this.

I was a kid and I clearly remember ketchup being used widely more than at my friends house. I could have just been blind but a lot more food had ketchup on it and this is from the viewpoint of an Asian kid. Sun sauce, sambal, and soy sauce were staples. We didn’t really use ketchup. It was around when I turned 18 that I noticed everyone uses ketchup more.

I think the ketchup heavy time was in the 80s and 90s.

I’m wondering what changed that made ketchup disappear more and more on American tables. Or if my own perception changed. Or if I just moved to a higher income and class of neighborhood
