It's 5:30am in the morning. I'm at work sleeping. It's dark. It's deserted. It's the middle of the night, at a warehouse on the outskirts of the city, in a third-world country. I hear a loud, thumping noise coming from the roof. It's coming from right above me.

I'm pretty sure I see a guy up there, and hear him jumping around on my roof. I am terrified, and don't know what to do. I just kind of lie there, petrified, and listen to this guy jump around for a couple of minutes. Finally, he gets on the other side of the warehouse. It's quiet. It's okay. I forget about it.

Later, I tell my co-workers about what happened. One of them mentions that there are kids living in the roof of the warehouse. Apparently, some slum kids have made a little hideout in the ductwork above the office. That explains a lot.

A few weeks later, it's 6pm. I'm walking home, tired from a long day at work. I live right across the street from the warehouse, and it's dark out. As I'm walking, I see a guy standing in the parking lot of the warehouse. He looks up and sees me walking, and he waves at me. I wave back, because we live in a third-world country, and it's dark out, and I don't want to seem like an asshole.

As I get closer, he says, "Hey! Are you the guy whose roof I jumped on the other day?" I laugh awkwardly, and say, "Oh yeah, that was you? I didn't know that was you!"

He says, "Yeah, that was me. I was just trying to get to my hideout, but I didn't know it would scare you."

I laugh again, and say,'s "No, no, no, it's okay. I didn't know there were people living up there. It scared the crap out of me, but it was OK."

We talk for a bit, and it turns out he and his friend have lived in the warehouse for a few months. They say that the roof is their "dream house," and that they like to jump around on it, and play on the pipes. They say they don't mean to scare people, they just like to have fun. We chat for a bit, and I go on my way.

Let's not meet again, slum kids.
