If you are skinny, don’t put your shirt up over your head when getting in a MRI.

I feel like this is a stupid obvious thing to know but I assumed it was common sense and well, it’s not. I recently had to have a brain MRI for some weird issues I’m having.

For those who don’t know, a MRI machine is claustrophobic as all get out, so they will usually give you a button to press if you need to get out. I thought hey, getting my head scanned won’t be so bad right? I’ll just pull the shirt off and leave my torso out, bad idea.

I got in the machine and it was probably about five minutes of just laying there when it suddenly hit me, the air in the room is cold, it’s circulating through the machine and my shirt is still covering my upper body. I tried to use all my might to lift the shirt, but it was no use, I was perplexed.

Then I realized the machine was probably magnetic and my metal ring was probably the issue. I tried again and was able to lift it but not for long, a few minutes later I felt my backside getting cold so I tried to lift again. During this time, I managed to hit the panic button, by the time they got in I had managed to get my shirt off me.

They told me if they would have taken the MRI while my ring was on my shirt that the machine could have potentially sucked me in and squished me like an accordion.

I have since spoken to some people and while it’s not common, it does happen. So yeah, if you ever have to have a MRI be sure to completely remove all your clothing.
