If the old man at the end of The Shining was just a guest at the hotel that went crazy and killed his family, it would have been such a let down.

At the end of the film, it's clearly established that Jack Torrance is the reincarnation of Delbert Grady, and was possessed by the Hotel's evil spirit.

But what if after the credits, the camera cut to the police station, where a detective is talking to Delbert's wife, and the detective says, "Ma'am, your husband just went crazy, and he's dead. I'm sorry."

"No," his wife says. "He was a good Christian. I'm sure he was possessed by demons."

The camera cuts to the Hotel, where Stella is standing in the ruins of the ballroom, surrounded by dead bodies. "I told you, he was a good Christian," she says. "It was clearly the work of the devil."

EDIT: I think I might have messed up the ending of The Shining. Delbert Grady was the one who Jack talked to in the bathroom. Jack eventually became Delbert Grady at the end of the film, but it was 1921, and Jack was at the party there.
