Does anyone else see the term "worldbuilding" as up its own arse

I'm a writer. I've been doing it for a long time, and before that I used to play DnD. Now for DnD you *had* to set up a world to play in. Beforehand you'd set up the rules of the magic system, the politics of the world, locations, etc. All that before up set up the specific story for the players.<br> <br> In my own work, I do the same thing. I set up the up front and then set up the individual story within that.<br> <br> But for me, that's just part of the story writing process. I don't think of it as any separate thing in and of itself, just as a process.<br> <br> The reason I've never been fond of the term is it implies the world and the story are separate, individual things. In reality they're deeply intertwined.<br> <br> The world is where the story takes place, the story is the interpersonal/political part of the world. You can't have the one without the other, and the one deeply influences the other.<br> <br> So to me, the term "worldbuilding" is just nonsense. The world isn't the story, it's where the story takes place. It's like calling the house you paint the painting itself. It's where the painting is, yes, but it's not the painting itself.<br><br>I'd just like to hear others thoughts on this.
