For those of you who are travelling to Italy, do you tip in Italy?

I was in Italy in May, and I tipped at a restaurant, and the waiter looked at me like I did something wrong. I know in Italy, with the bill, they often add a compulsory "service charge" at the end of the bill, but am I wrong to leave an extra 10%?
