New York governor Kathy Hochul sues the NRA over insurance

Kathy Hochul, the governor of New York, sued the National Rifle Association on Thursday, seeking to put it out of business over allegations that top executives and board members abused their positions.<br><br>The lawsuit claims the NRA was aware for two years of “a significant waste of assets” resulting in losses totalling $64m, according to the New York attorney general, Letitia James.<br><br>James said in a news conference that the organisation’s prominence and powerful firearms industry allies made it too easy for fake charities to be set up.<br><br>The state is asking a court to order the dissolution of the NRA, which was founded in Brooklyn in 1871. The non-profit organisation is headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia.<br><br>The NRA said in a statement that James was seeking to “take over, and destroy the NRA and Elaine and Wayne were trying to stop her, gathering evidence — including financials, communications, and witness statements”.<br><br>The governor also said that the NRA violated New York state charity laws.<br><br>The NRA also faces an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.<br><br>The governor filed a lawsuit today in the Supreme Court of New York to dissolve the NRA in its entirety for its years-long gross mistmanagement and self-dealing leading to financial losses of up to $64 million.<br><br>— Kathy Hochul (@GovKathyHochul) August 6, 2020
