As a server don’t assume every table wants alcoholic beverages.

I’ve had tables ask me why I’m so excited about selling them drinks and I’m not allowed to say I don’t make much money if I don’t sell liquor. All tables are not alcoholics. A lot of people work this weekend because they are going on a bender next weekend for St. Patrick’s day, so they don’t want to be hung over on the clock. Some are really on a budget, or just don’t like the taste. It makes me angry I’m being judged because I’m a server. My job is not to sell beer and liquor. My job is to serve you and make sure you have good food and even if you don’t, that you don’t go home angry. This is my life. This is my career. I’m not going to be judged because of the path I’ve chosen.

Edit: Wow. I guess I’m getting a lot of attention for this post. I mean, I knew our industry isn’t looked upon as a “career”. I don’t care about that. I’m a server. I do this because I love it. I love interacting with people, and I love making sure my tables have the best dining experience ever. I don’t know if I would ever be in a different career path, but this is an industry I like, and I’m good at it. I’m just tired of fellow servers judging me because I don’t care if I don’t make $200 a night. I’m just happy with doing my job and if that’s $80 or $200, I’m just happy to take care of my tables, give good service, and take home my check. I don’t care about tips, because I don’t count on them. I’m just here to enjoy my time here, listen to what my tables have to say, and provide for me and my daughter.
