I’m American, and I’ve never been more than a few states away from my hometown. Being in the military sent me to Europe for a few weeks. I was overcome with emotion.

As the title says, I was never in a good position to travel while growing up. I never had the money to take a long trip. I joined the Air Force, got stationed in Poland, and the other day I had a small break in my training to take a trip to the next country.#####I had never been out of the United States, and then just a few weeks later I found myself in the Czech Republic.

I got a nice hotel in the city of Prague and had a day to roam around. I saw many beautiful sights: the Prague castle, St. Joseph’s cathedral, and the massive St. Nicholas cathedral in Old Town Square.

I sat on a patio in the square facing the massive church listening to the organ play as the tower bells chimed in. I had a nice beer and a small plate of food. The rain had stopped for a few hours. I sat there and thought about the path that brought me to Prague. A small town in the southern United States, the Air Force, and now there I sat in one of Europe’s most beautiful cities.

I began to tear up and then openly cried. The massive cathedral was opposite of me, the rain had stopped, the music was beautiful. It was a moment I will never forget. I realized this was something I may never experience again, and if I never did that was okay.

A man in my (Czech) mid-20s asked if I was okay, I said I was fine, he said “good, you are in Prague; it is nice, yes?”

I sat there for a while longer then went for a walk.

Edit: I am back at training now. Some of you suggested listening to the Prague radio stations. That is a great idea. I think I will also buy some Czech beer to mix with my IPA shit. Great suggestion. Some of you asked about the cats at Charles Bridge. They were all shitting themselves. A few were very stressed though. One cat house had a cat that was very happy to see us and wanted pets. Good for her. I hope she stays happy for the rest of her life.
