I am white, my boyfriend is black. I've lived in Australia my whole life, he moved here from Nigeria a year ago to study.

I am quite sensitive to racist comments, even subtle ones. On a recent family trip to buy Christmas decorations, I was browsing and my friend came up behind me and put a hand on my shoulder. She said "are you buying him one of those trees?" I turned and asked what she meant and she pointed at my boyfriend.

He was silently browsing the ornaments. I said I didn't appreciate her comment and she said she was just being "funny". I don't think she thought it was funny, she knows my boyfriend is black, and it seemed like she was surprised I'd assume she meant him when he's so obviously different racially. She didn't reply to that.

I feel she made a racist comment and was acting as if I was being sensitive for calling her out. I didn't say anything further as I didn't want the attention to grow into more but I can't get past the feeling that she was being racist and disrespectful.

AITA for calling her a racist over that?
