I met Tanya with a mutual friend of ours, and it was basically love at first sight. She’s the first person who after meeting her I feel like I could actually spend the rest of my life with.

The only thing Tanya doesn’t have a handle on is that since she was born blind, she has no concept of sight. Well, she says that she believes what sight is, but she’s always confessed to me that she’s in a completely dark room in her mind. She can’t even picture a flame or a light.

So she doesn’t get a handle on how light works. She’ll turn the lights of at night, and I’ll ask her “why did you turn the lights off in the living room? We can’t see anything now.”

And she’ll say “I’ll see you in the bedroom.” And walk into the bedroom, turn off those lights, and shut the door, like she’s closing the light in the living room. She’s been doing it our whole relationship. It’s pretty funny.

Well Tanya and I have been together for about a year, and we finally decided to take the next step and get an apartment together. It’s been a couple of months, and she’s been getting more and more comfortable. She knows every corner of the house by heart, she can even make food for herself whenever she wants. I feel bad that she does most of the cooking, since I have sight, but the girl can put together a mean steak.

In fact, the first night we moved in, she decided to surprise me by cooking steak. We sat down and talked for a while, and I got up to use the bathroom. When I got back to the living room, I noticed that all of the lights were off. I asked Tanya if she had turned them off, and she said she had, as if she had done something wrong.

I asked her why she had done it. She said “So when you went to the bathroom, you couldn’t see anything.” I kind of laughed awkwardly, and she didn’t really understand. I just told her it was kind of weird, and that since I had sight, it made it difficult for me to do things when I couldn’t see.

Fast forward a couple of days, I was watching Netflix on the couch, and Tanya got up and went to the bathroom. I was surprised when she turned off the TV. I asked her what she did, and she told me. I told her that she turned off the TV, and she put her hands on her face.

“Oh, I thought that the TV was sight, and that turning it off would mean you couldn’t see anything.”

I kind of laughed again, and told her it wasn’t like that, that the TV was something completely separate from sight.

The next few days were fine and dandy. That was, until Tanya turned off my phone. Now, I don’t know whether she thought it was sight, or just decided to do it on a whim, but after I specifically told her that sight was separate from a lot of other things, she decided to turn off my phone. I asked her why, and she said “So you couldn’t see anything when you were on your phone.”

I kind of got a little upset at her, and said “Listen, so when you’re typing on your brail computer, you can’t hear anything, right? You can’t hear anything at all, right?”

She said that no, she could still hear things. I told her that turning off the phone was like that. She didn’t get it, and she put her hands over her face.

I finally got through to her after that, and she’s been doing pretty well since then. Tanya’s the love of my life, and I was a little worried she would never understand sight, but it’s all been going well.

In fact, last night I was laying in bed and I heard her whisper “Good night, sweetheart.”

And then she turned out the lights.

[Edit:] Tanya and I are glad that you guys are getting a kick out of this. I’d like to fill you all in on a little information about Tanya’s past. Tanya was born with sight, but lost it due to an accident when she was very young. Tanya doesn’t remember the accident, but she remembers what sight is like. She’s told me that she has a very small picture of what it’s like, but she doesn’t think she’s really ever experienced sight’s true beauty in all it’s glory. I’m working on making sure she never has to give up anything again.
