Anyone else worried about the rising popularity of UBI?

There have been a lot of big voices in the past year touting UBI as the future, and even Zuckerberg jumped on the bandwagon last week.

I’m not saying UBI is categorically bad, it could be useful in certain situations, like the pandemic. But I’m not convinced it’s viable as a long term solution. I live in Alaska, and we have a form of UBI with the PFD. It’s great when you get the money every year, but I feel like most people I know don’t use it wisely. The common thing to do is buy some stuff right when the money comes out, and then take the rest of the month or two off work, surf and fish your face off.

I know that’s just one example, but I’m honestly afraid that a national UBI would create a culture shift to more people just not working, which would be a huge hit to productivity. I’m not really sure how it would affect people’s overall happiness; I know a few people who live decently off of this money alone, but I’ve also seen people struggle with addiction because they don’t have a need to work.

Again, I’m not saying we should never have a UBI. I think there might be some available solutions to make it work, like a negative income tax, but I’m not convinced that the way other countries and some of our states do it is a viable way to live. What are your thoughts?

Edit: I don’t think this is the correct subreddit for this topic, so if someone knows of a better place to have this conversation please let me know!
