The other day, my MIL and FIL were visiting, and my MIL was complaining (not for the first time) about our dining set being too big for the dining room. My In-laws would prefer something sleeker and more modern but I disagree - this set is inherited from my grandmother, and I’m very attached to it. We’ve had this conversation many times before and it always frustrates me, because it does fit and functions perfectly for us. I get tired of them criticizing our upgrade choices.

This time however FIL had an idea. He offered to take the dining set home and upgrade our kitchenette with a set of his choice. And then pointed out that we’d have more room for a new fridge, dishwasher, and maybe a big microwave with a toaster and oven. I declined. My husband and I know exactly what we want for our kitchenette, and we’ve been waiting to save up and get it. I’m not willing to let someone else pay for it and dictate the choices.

He then offered to upgrade our living room furniture - a smaller couch and a smaller loveseat, which would leave us space for a desk. Again, I declined. My husband and I have a very specific couch we’re waiting for, and we like our furniture as is.

At this point FIL and MIL were getting frustrated. They said I’m being very picky, and that we’re too proud to let others help. I said no we’re just not ready for those upgrades. And then I added that they seem to think our house is too big for the furniture we have, but really we have too much stuff overall and not enough closet space, which is why we’re saving up for more closets instead.

FIL and MIL were absolutely furious that I had suggested the house they built for my husband as a child is too big or too small for our furniture, and they haven’t stopped complaining to my husband about me being ungrateful since. They say I’m living in their gift and I’m not allowed to criticize it.

AITA?
