I'm convinced a guy tried to kill me in his sleep because of a night terror, in front of his wife/girlfriend.

To begin with: I have no idea why someone would do this, or what the motive would have been. I'm just thankful I got away safely. This occured years ago, and I still can't really be sure what actually happened here, but you'll understand why I can't shake the feeling that I escaped something potentially very bad.

This happened at a time in my life when I was traveling with friends to music festivals and concerts, and we would usually stay in budget hotels. You've probably heard of Euro 2012 right? So, we traveled to Poland to attend one of the games and then visit some cities, and we stayed in a budget hotel on the outskirts of Warsaw. I don't remember the name, but in this hotel you could open your door and walk straight in, since there was no separate door to the lobby.

One night, when I think the game had just ended and we were back in the hotel, I woke up in need of some water. It was probably somewhere between 12:00-3:00. There was a water cooler in the lobby, so I had to walk through the corridor to get there. And the water cooler was placed very awkwardly, probably the original idea was that it should stand somewhere else, but they didn't use that space for anything else. So, the water cooler was placed in a corner that you had to pass on your way to the reception, placed in a way that the people in the reception couldn't see it, and vice versa. When I walked, I didn't see anyone in the reception, nor the corridor.

As I stood there drinking, a man in his mid 30's comes walking down the corridor from the other side (meaning away from the reception), dressed in some casual clothes that I don't really remember the details of. He approached me at a slow pace, not saying anything, and gave me a very intense stare. It was so intense and peculiar that I remember being taken aback by it. He didn't seem particularly angry, at least not from what I could read in his face. It just looked like he was very focused on something, maybe slightly confused, though that might just have been my projection.

I thought that maybe he wanted to get water as well, but he didn't walk up to the cooler. Instead, he stopped just next to the water cooler, stood there in silence for a second, and then gave me a slight nod, before he slowly started walking towards me. I didn't want to seem paranoid, but this whole situation was so bizarre and intense that I got a bad feeling in my gut, especially since he didn't say a word. I started backing away slowly, keeping him in eye contact, and he mirrored the movement and continued slowly walking towards me. He didn't run towards me, but he didn't slow down either.

You see, the corridor had a bend in it. So basically, if you looked from my POV in the direction this man was coming from, you would have to walk some 8 meters before the corridor bends to the right, and you can't see the reception from that point. When we were about to reach that point, I accidentally locked eyes with the guy and stopped backing away for a short second. He stopped as well, and then... he charged at me at full sprint.

I've never run so fast in my life. I sprinted down the corridor, and as I approached the reception, I screamed at the top of my lungs, hoping to make as much noise as possible to hopefully wake up people around us. I reached the end of the corridor and turned right, and I saw a hotel room door in front of me. I started banging on the door as loud as I could, still screaming, until someone opened from the inside.

It was an older lady, who I think was German, who opened the door. I started explaining to her what had happened, but I was in such a state of panic that she didn't really understand what I was saying. But, she let me in anyway, and I explained to her and her husband what had happened. We stayed in the room for some time, and we didn't hear anyone running or banging on doors, and I was too scared to exit and take a look around the hotel.

At one point, the lady went to the reception to inquire about what happened. And the receptionist told her that they didn't see anyone running or hear any noise. There was also a security camera in the lobby, but it didn't capture anyone else in the corridor.

I'm convinced this guy came straight from a hotel room in the corridor I was in. I've thought about this a lot, especially in the immediate days/weeks following the event. And I've thought about other explanations, like him coming from outside, or the reception, but he started walking from the other side of the corridor. I'm also convinced that he was asleep. There was something extremely off in his movements and his facial expressions. Maybe not fully asleep, but in some sort of transitory state.

He didn't react at all to my screaming at the top of my lungs, he didn't speed up when I ran. He didn't speed up even when I was close to escaping in the bend of the corridor. That's why I think that his wife/girlfriend or whoever was in the room must have been a heavy sleeper, or completely drunk, to not be woken up by my screaming.

I hope the guy is fine, and that it was just a night terror that made him act this way. I can't imagine someone being so twisted that they would lie in wait in a hotel corridor for a victim, in front of their spouse.

But, to the guy from that night, let's not meet.
