My family and I were at a rest stop. I was around 8 years old at the time so I don't remember everything, but we were parked in the parking lot facing the building where the restrooms and vending machines were.

My mom told me to go to the vending machine and get her a Dr Pepper. It was one of those old-fashioned vending machines where you put the money in and pull the soda out from the bottom. I put my money in and chose the Dr Pepper, pulled the bottle out, but it got stuck. As I was trying to pull it out, a man walked over to me and said he'd help. I assumed he was just a nice guy who was passing by. He started pulling on the bottle and I tugged on it too, and eventually, it came out.

I thanked him, took the Dr Pepper, and started walking back to our car. The man started walking next to me and asked if I was sure I could carry that on my own, and I said yes. He insisted that he carry it for me because it looked heavy. I refused, saying I could carry it myself. He kept insisting and got angry, saying that I should just let him help me.

I started to feel scared and walked faster, but he kept up with me. I was still naive and thought that he was just trying to help even though something about him felt off. When we got to the car, he opened the door for me and reached for the Dr Pepper. I handed it to him thinking he was just going to hand it to me in the car, but when he had it, he shut the door and ran off into the parking lot.

Me and my family were so scared and yelled at him to stop but he ran into the wooded area at the edge of the parking lot. We jumped in our car and took off as fast as we could. We never saw him again and made it safely to our destination, but that always freaked me out and I never forgot it.
