My students are so entitled and it feels like their parents are forcing them to attend school. What's a teacher supposed to do about this?

I think this is a worldwide issue for many teachers.

I teach high school students and most of them are just terrible when it comes to completing the schoolwork. They also don't give a crap about the grades and are just happy to go attend school and hang out with their friends. Some of them literally show up, complete zero schoolwork, and just go home. And the parents just drop them off and pick them up, even though they know their kids are not actually trying at school.

It seems like most teens want to do everything but schoolwork. They want to be on their phones, they want to be on social media, attend sports, hang out with friends, etc. You literally cannot get them to do anything academic and it makes my teaching experience terrible.

It's just frustrating to see so many children waste their school years and the parents not care about it. I know that there are people that disagree with how the school system works, but I don't think this is a system issue, but rather a people issue. People have gone to school for 200+ years and have been successful.

I also don't think the government should pay these teens to sit their butts in school. I don't think throwing money at the problem is going to solve it.

The problem seems to be really widespread, as many of my colleagues struggle with the same issue. It's just the way it is and I don't think there is any way to fix it. I just feel sorry for the kids that want to learn something.
