How do I get my boyfriend to knock off this annoying habit?

My 27F boyfriend 28M and I have been together for two years. We share a house in a quiet neighborhood with a lot of families. He doesn’t really have any annoying quirks, and he’s thoughtful and generous, so I feel a little terrible even bringing this up, but I can’t help it – I wish he’d stop whistling.

He’s always whistling these two notes, high and low, back and forth. Low-high-low-high, and then he’ll stop for about 15 minutes and start again. He only does this when he’s at home, so it’s basically all the time that we’re together. Sometimes I haven’t noticed and he’ll catch me staring at him.

“I keep telling you it helps me keep an eye on Charlie,” he says.

I met Charlie after only a few weeks of dating, but he’s important to the story so I’m going to tell it from the beginning.

The first time I met Charlie, I thought he was my boyfriend’s little brother. I met him in the living room one evening, and I mistook him for a child because he was small for his age and had a childlike complexion. But after I talked with him for a few minutes longer I saw how wrinkled his face was.

“How old are you?” I asked.

“I’m a little boy forever,” he said.

As I got to know Charlie, I realized that he was magic. The first time my boyfriend and I had sex, Charlie watched the whole time. He was polite – he sat in the corner and didn’t make a sound – but it did feel strange knowing he was there.

I read online and asked around, but I couldn’t figure out how my boyfriend became Charlie’s guardian – or maybe “master” is a more accurate word. He says he doesn’t know how Charlie ended up with him, or where Charlie comes from. And Charlie doesn’t seem interested in leaving. He’s been with my boyfriend for as long as he can remember.

Charlie doesn’t do much – mostly he sits around the house looking out windows and watching us talk. He never responds to a conversation, and he doesn’t seem to care about television or books. The only time he seems even remotely interested in anything is when my boyfriend whistles. Whenever I catch Charlie after my boyfriend has whistled, his eyes are narrowed and he looks like he’s holding his breath. Once I asked him what my boyfriend was doing when he whistled, but Charlie didn’t answer.

The whistling started when my boyfriend was a little boy – he says Charlie taught him the melody. The sound is so simple that I can’t even think of it without humming it. It makes me feel a little embarrassed to admit it, but the first time I was home alone without my boyfriend, I tried whistling the song myself. I don’t know what I was expecting, but I saved my boyfriend’s contact info in my phone under “EMERGENCY WHISTLING HOTLINE” and whistled the tune as loudly as I could. Nothing happened.

My boyfriend and I moved in together about six months ago. Charlie came too. And ever since then, it’s become a running joke with my boyfriend that I don’t like his whistling. He whistles all the time now. Anytime Charlie walks by. Anytime Charlie looks at him. My boyfriend whistles when we’re eating dinner or watching t.v. or having conversations. And whenever Charlie is in the yard or the garage, my boyfriend whistles. He’s getting to the point where he’s almost whistling as often as he breathes. And Charlie seems more agitated the more he whistles. I don’t mind the whistling as much as I used to. To be honest, I wish my boyfriend would whistle less. The truth is, Charlie scares me to death, and I don’t want him getting mad at my boyfriend.

Charlie doesn’t say much, so you have to get used to his voice to understand him. He’s not mean or anything, but he’s very serious. And he’s strong – much stronger than he looks. The few times I’ve seen him get upset, objects around him break and animals run away. And he’s always watching – always – and I feel like he’s waiting for something to happen.

That’s why, even though I wish my boyfriend would stop whistling, I don’t think I’m ever going to tell him. Charlie and I are like friends now, but I know I couldn’t compete with him if my boyfriend had to choose.
