[US] Americans traveling abroad: has anyone ever been stopped at a border asking invasive personal questions?

I've heard stories about Americans traveling to Canada (particularly by car) and being asked invasive questions by border guards, like "What is your occupation?" or "Do you have any health conditions?" or even if you have therapy appointments scheduled after your trip.
