Discipline is complete bullshit now, anyone else notice this?

After being a high school teacher for now 14 years, I’ve always believed that the majority of students you could hold accountable for their actions. I always believed that common sense and being able to emotionally handle anything that comes your way was par for the course for almost all students. This is not the case now. I just attended a professional development workshop this past Saturday, and the regional director of student discipline and behavior spoke at length about how we need to change the way we approach and deal with student misbehavior. Apparently, teachers are no longer allowed to use common sense. Apparently, teachers are no longer able to hold students accountable for their actions. Apparently, teachers are no longer able to sit down with a student you’ve known for 2 years now and have a conversation about why their behavior wasn’t okay and why it needs to change. Apparently, teachers are no longer able to tell a student to stop using their FUCKING PHONE IN CLASS. Apparently, teachers are no longer able to tell a student to keep their damn hands to themselves. Apparently, teachers are no longer allowed to tell a student to leave a classroom after being asked a million times not to interrupt the lesson. Apparently, teachers are not allowed to tell a student to keep their mask up in the middle of a global pandemic. Apparently, teachers are no longer allowed to go off script. Apparently, teachers, we have to word everything we say exactly a certain way. Apparently, teachers are no longer allowed to take a student aside and hear what’s going on if they’ve had a bad day and talk them down as a responsible adult. Apparently, we as teachers are not allowed to do anything anymore without a plan. Apparently, a conversation can no longer be the plan. Apparently, teachers, we can’t use common sense anymore because we have to make sure we’ve done everything by the regional book. Apparently, teachers, parents now have more of a say than ever. Apparently, teachers are now no longer good enough at reading the room emotionally. Apparently, teachers, we are no longer good enough at knowing our students, as our director said “you don’t know what a student has gone through in their life, so you always have to be aware of that, everything could trigger a student at any moment.” Apparently, we as teachers aren’t able to make decisions anymore and are just FUCKING ROBOTS.

I know this may seem like I’m just venting, and that I’m just being negative, but holy shit, what the fuck is going on. I love the kids, and I love being a teacher. But now I get the feeling that I’m just here to warm up a seat, pay my dues, collect my paycheck, and I don’t even get to be a good teacher. And fuck discipline. Fuck the system. Teachers, what the ever loving shit is happening. Am I overreacting here? I can’t be the only person that feels this way.
