The title may seem controversial at first glance, but give me a chance to explain. A person is more likely to give to charity if they get something in return.

For example, a charity may sell a shirt for $15, a mug for $10, a sticker for $5, etc. Let's say half of that money goes to pay for the item, and the other half goes to the cause. In this example, if you buy a shirt, $7.50 of that goes to the cause. Now, if you haven't given to charity in a long time, you may feel bad, and think "Oh, I'll just give them the $15 instead of buying the shirt." But you never do.

By paying $15 for the shirt, you have physically done something in exchange for your money. A lot of people don't donate because they "don't have time" for it, and when they do have time, they may forget, or not know where exactly to donate. By putting a physical item in a person's hands, they feel like they're doing something for charity, and are more likely to donate in the future.

I'm not saying that you should never give 100% of your charity money, but I am saying that getting physically getting something in return will make you more likely to donate in the future because of the satisfaction that you're helping a cause.

Edit: A decent amount of you are saying that I'm not making a strong point, and that's understandable. Talk with me in the comments, and I'll try to strengthen it.
